Mike’s Grill

h1 Saturday, September 2nd, 2006

I’ve already been there twice in the last 5 days. They say that they have famous burgers, and they can definitely back that up. It has been a very long time that I’ve had a burger when I’ve gone out to eat, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ts juicy, meaty, and not at all that greasy. The taste is pretty amazing, I’ll admit. I’m not really sure about the rest of their food, but if you want an amazing burger with a good serving of fries, this is your place. It’s cheap too.

Easy Chair Cafe

It’s 10am on a Saturday and I’m sitting in the Easy Chair Cafe at the University Mall. You all know where that is, everyone who has been to the dreaded Math Emporium knows. The place gives off every possible vibe of “cafe” imagineable. It’s the kind of cafe you’d see in a movie, at least the front register is. There’s also plenty of seating, though now couches. If you’re a laptop toter, the back area has plenty of tables and outlets for you to hook up to their free wireless LAN. As for the prices, definitely cheaper than Starbucks, and the quality? Honestly… there’s no difference.

You’re simply paying the extra money at Starbucks because of its name. Try this place out, they’ve got great cookies, free internet, plenty of seating, and pretty good coffee products.

I love cookies.

The Cellar

One of the more random places I’ve been to. They’ve got a GREAT spinach and artichoke dip, if you’re into that. Their pizza is…original, and good. While the interior is a bit small, as is the bar, the environment is relaxing for the most part, and there is a lower level that seems a little sketchy…

Anyway, the food isn’t bad, they give you a lot, especially with the sandwiches. The prices are normal. Overall this is about as average a place as you can get. I recommend this place for having lunch with a friend.

Jimmy John’s

If I had to pick only one restaurant to eat at for the rest of my life, this would be it. Their sandwiches and subs are incredible. The selection is excellent, and you can order it the way you want, with or without certain things. The service is fantastic, and there is no minimum purchase amount for delivery. Yes that’s right boys and girls, they deliver subs right to you. And not only that, they deliver within 10 minutes (I’ve timed them every single time, and I live all the way out in Windsor Hills…most impressive). There isn’t a thing about this place I don’t like. Thier prices are highly competitive with that of Subway and Quizzno’s, except that Subway and Quizzno’s can barely compete in taste and quality.

Fazoli’s

Everyone loves Italian food. And trust me when I say it’s even better when it gets served within 10 minutes. The thought of “fast-food” Italian food is sketchy at best. But this place isn’t really fast food, they’re just efficient. The food here is arguably restaurant quality (the layout of the place is much like a restaurant). Their lasagna is most excellent. To be honest my mother is the only one that makes better lasagna. It’s a really relaxed atmosphere, a great place to go with friends and relax. My favorite part is their breadsticks. Not only are they free, not only does a waiter come around every few minutes offering you more, but they are incredibly delicious. The only thing this place is missing is a location in downtown Blacksburg.

El Rodeo

One of two mexican restaurants that I know of here in Blacksburg, located on North Main across from TCBY. Personally I get a wierd feeling when I go there, but I’m never let down by the food they have to offer. I will say however, that this place is not for the big eater. While they offer dishes with multiple items, they just don’t quite cut it when you’re incredibly hungry. For the healthy eaters, this really isn’t the place for you. Overall I give this place a B-. Prices could be a little lower if you ask me.

Backstreet’s

Well this isn’t half bad. It’s a nice place, you can sit inside or outside depending on your mood, the service is decent and the food is very much above average. Their pizza is quite impressive, although their lasagna is begging for improvement. Then of course you have your other italian dishes like calzones and such, all of them well made at this restaurant. They provide carry-out as well, which many people find convenient. All in all I’d give this place a solid B+. I’m rarely disappointed going here. The prices are very fair as well.

Double Dragon

h1 Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Blacksburg, being a small town, isn’t really known for its chinese food. In fact the places that I have been to have been incredibly lacking. However Double Dragon has found a sweet spot with me in that it is the one place that uses actual meat. The quality of food and the taste is superb, right down to thier fried rice combinations. The only downside is that they do not deliver, however no other chinese resaurant does either. On another upside, their prices are competitive in comparison to everywhere else, so for what you’re getting (real food in this case), it’s worth it. So if you’ve got a craving some really good chinese, go with Double Dragon. Anything else and you’ll get fried skin.
